Summary: For Jack, all the pain is worth it. A double drabble.
‘It’ll be okay,’ Ianto’s calm voice repeated, bringing a wash of serenity over a scene that must have been chaotic. Both he and Jack knew that was a lie. Jack’s injuries were far too severe to expect anything other than death as the inevitable outcome. Jack almost wished death would hurry itself up and take him.
‘Shhh,’ Ianto said as Jack opened his mouth to say something, stroking his head with gentle, reassuring motions.
And Jack was reassured, but not for the sake of having Ianto there by his side as he died, slowly and painfully – though Ianto being there was without question better than dying alone. Jack had died so many times that it was impossible to keep count of them all, but for each and every one of them, as much as there was agony and blood and excruciating pain, all of it was worth it. It sounded counterintuitive to embrace the hurt, but Jack knew that whatever happened – however awful it was and however much his mind screamed for relief from the hurt – that every ounce of pain he endured was an ounce that someone else – someone he cared for very deeply – wouldn't have to endure themselves.
