‘I thought you always healed,’ Gwen said, waiting for a quiet moment in Jack's office after the others had gone home for the day. It had been a difficult day, watching Ianto pretend that everything was okay when it clearly wasn't. They’d all been too scared to do more than let him just do what he was doing without speaking. None of them could find the right words to say. Now he was on administrative leave for a month. Gwen considered it a mercy, allowing him to grieve in the luxury of his own home rather than having to face the people responsible for killing his girlfriend.
Jack barely reacted to her words, just staring blankly through the window at an empty hub. His fingers moved unconsciously towards the cut in his lip. The area around it now was purple and looked painful. ‘It doesn't work that way,’ he finally said. He snorted and shook his head. ‘It's a reminder that I'm not invincible. That I screw up and have to live with the consequences.’
‘I’m sure he didn’t mean it,’ Gwen replied. ‘People do things in the heat of the moment.’
Jack smiled wryly. ‘I hope he meant it.’
