Summary: Jack is worried that Ianto is spending too much time down in the archives. A triple drabble.
Jack tended to get worried when Ianto spent too much time sealed away in the archives, and lately he’d been spending an awful lot of time down there. It wasn’t healthy. Not when there was so much happening upstairs that was far more interesting.
Ianto? Jack called out, announcing his presence so as not to startle Ianto into dropping anything dangerous or falling off a ladder. Instead he was surprised to see Ianto at his desk, surrounded by piles of dusty old case files and typing at a frenetic pace. ‘What are you doing? Please tell me you’re not typing up old reports by hand. You know we have tech that can do that, right?’
‘Of course I know,’ Ianto replied, pausing his typing. ‘I’ve only been in charge of it for the past decade.’
‘Right…’ Jack paused and frowned. ‘So, what’s all this? You’ve been hiding down here at every opportunity for weeks.’
‘Research, mostly.’
‘Research on what?’
Ianto slid his laptop around. ‘I’m writing a book. Torchwood – A history through the ages. After my last visit with Archie in Glasgow he had all kinds of stories that needed committing to paper so I thought, why not have a proper written history? Who we were, what we’ve done, all the interesting cases and the close shaves with the end of the world.’ Then his brow creased. ‘Only, I’m up to the 1920s and to be frank, it’s all gone a little bit dull. I was hoping to find something in these case files to liven it up.’
Jack perched on the edge of the desk. ‘Ah, the twenties. You’re right, it was dull, but that’s because all the action was happening across the pond in America. Hand me that laptop, Mister Jones. Have I got some stories for you!’
