torchwood100Summary: Jack has to own his own past so that he can move forward. A triple drabble.
‘Talk about a tough first day back at work,’ Jack said, flopping sideways onto the inviting looking bed without so much as taking his shoes off first. ‘A night in a nice hotel feels like something we should treat ourselves to more often, don’t you think?’
Ianto didn’t even remark on the shoes, quietly shrugging out of his jacket and draping it neatly over the back of a chair. ‘I don’t know,’ he replied. ‘It depends on whether you plan on sticking around.’
Jack lifted his head off the pillow to frown at him. ‘Of course I do. Why would you say that?’
Ianto shrugged. ‘Just seemed like you might have more fun without us, hanging out with people like John Hart. He’s a real charmer.’
Jack narrowed his eyes. ‘He’s gone, Ianto. And good riddance, I say.’
‘Really? I can’t believe you used to be partners.’
‘It wasn’t like that,’ Jack said, sitting up from the bed, even if it had been very much like that. ‘I wasn’t a good person back then, but I never got a kick out of hurting people. Messing with them, stealing from them, yes, but never physical violence. I’m not like John. Never was. We did some bad stuff for the sake of money and we partied harder, but it was never enough for him. He liked to watch people hurt, especially if he was the one doing the hurting.’
‘I know. I can speak from personal experience.’ It didn’t stop Ianto from coming over and taking up a spot on the edge of the bed, right next to him. Jack used the opportunity to rest a hand on his leg.
‘Why do you think I left him? Some lines you just shouldn’t cross. It wasn’t easy, but it was definitely worth it.’
