Summary: Jack hasn't known home for a long, long time. A double drabble.
“Going home wouldn’t fix that.” Jack’s words resonated somewhere deep inside of Ianto, bringing forth a whole wave of guilt he’d never felt before for Jack’s plight, trapped here in a time and place that wasn’t his, and possibly never would be. He couldn’t go back, couldn’t see his family again, look upon the place he’d grown up.
It was something Ianto took for granted, and even devalued. When had he last called his sister just to see how she was doing, or visited the cemetery to lay flowers for the parents that had raised him? Everything Ianto had ever known in his life was no more than a fifteen minute car ride away, and yet he scarcely gave it a thought, let alone wondered what it would be like to miss it.
He couldn’t bring himself to ask Jack whether he considered this place a home of sorts. It felt too shallow and simple a thing to ask, given everything that Jack must have seen and experienced. This place was just a layover to the next thing, somewhere on that long road of immortality where the relationship that they shared now was just a tiny flicker of a moment.
