torchwood100Summary: The Committee have left a message for Torchwood. A triple drabble.
‘Well, this place is a mess,’ Jack said, surveying what was left of the factory floor in this tiny remote little part of Wales.
Suzie pulled off her latex gloves and dropped down onto her haunches looking knackered. ‘I can't help but wonder if they wanted us to find this mess or not,’ she said.
‘I suspect the former,’ Jack replied.
Suzie picked up what used to be the arm of a semi-humanoid robot, a replica of its original human version which, like it, had been wandering around the town in a bit of a daze but, unlike its original, had returned back to the factory the way it was programmed to. Or at least it had until somebody had decided to destroy the factory and leave the evidence in ruins. This was all that was left of the Ovid Living Doll Company.
‘I don't get it, Jack,’ Suzie said. ‘If they really were building robots capable of acting and looking like real human beings, why leave the evidence behind? The Committee must know we’re onto them by now.’
‘Of course they do,’ Jack replied. ‘But for some reason they want us to know exactly what they're doing, or perhaps they're just showing off. Maybe this was just one of many factories that they have across Britain. After all, why bother duplicating rural Welsh people when you could be replicating politicians, company CEOs and other high-profile people who could wield power in the corridors of Whitehall?’
Jack dropped to his knees next to her and took the robotic arm from her, giving it a judicious glare. ‘No, I think this is just one link in a long chain of complicated machinations that The Committee have deployed,’ he told her. ‘We've only just scratched the surface of what they're up to.’
