Summary: Jack is realising where true happiness lies. A double drabble.
Jack felt a small weight drop to the bottom of his stomach as the bride and groom finally exchanged kisses. He could see just how happy Gwen was and he didn’t want to ruin it. After everything they’d already been through today, he’d wondered if Gwen would actually go through with marrying her beau. If anything, today had only proved just how much she truly loved Rhys – a man who was nothing special, who didn’t chase aliens for a living or look like someone from central casting.
Whatever fantasies Gwen might sometimes have about whether she and Jack should have been together had been firmly quashed. Gwen needed someone who was going to be there for her, all day, every day. Jack, for whatever his own feelings on the matter were, was never going to be there for Gwen like that. Time would always move on for him, and he’d always disappoint whoever thought they loved him.
It wasn’t that Jack didn’t love her, but it was love of a different kind. He loved her passion and her determination and her smile, but she could never fill the need inside him to be loved and understood as just a man.
