Summary: Ianto gets caught up in a fantasy

Ianto dropped the pen and stared despondently at the piles of files and crates of artifacts on his desk. Despite his best efforts, the mountain of work encroaching on his desk in the archives was not going down, and indeed, only seemed to be getting bigger each day.

He slumped, leaning backward in the chair and laid his head back against its tall leather back, closing his eyes for a moment so that he couldn't see the impossible task laid out before him.

Instead when he closed his eyes he pictured his desk, completely empty except for a single file laid open on the blotter, which was the one he was currently working on.

He pictured the scene that lay just beyond his desk. Instead of being dark, dank and dusty, it was light and airy, pristine and neat. Gone were the moulding walls and smell of decay. The floors would be polished concrete, the walls brightly lit, and the shelves glistening silver.  Gone would be the rotting wooden shelves, tatty boxes and steamer trunks currently housing all of their precious items. The shelves would be stacked neatly with plastic and metal crates, each barcoded and logged into a computerized system, which only the archival team would have access to.

Oh yes, it wouldn't just be him anymore. There'd be a whole team of dedicated staff, whose only function would be to tag and file artifacts, retrieve them from archive and return them to their correct place once finished. There'd be no more ad-hoc requests, no more leaving things just lying about the hub willy nilly, and no more dumping them back on Ianto's desk once they'd lost interest in whatever it was that had made them needed in the first place. Once that team was in place, a second team would be on hand for the correct identification of items, ensuring their proper storage requirements, and each room of the archives fit out specifically to meet its purpose. Everything would be digitized, indexed, and kept under lock and key, so that no harm might come to original and historical items.

Yes, he could see it all now. The archives would no longer be just an afterthought, and Ianto no longer its underappreciated archiving overlord. Torchwood would come to respect its archives as a vital component of their organization, and he would be their department leader, bringing Torchwood into a new information age.

'Ianto...' Jack's voice purred, just inches away from his own. He opened his eyes and found Jack leaning his hands heavily on the armrests, his nose almost touching Ianto's. How he'd gotten that close without Ianto getting a whiff of those fifty-first century pheromones was incomprehensible.

'You had the most utterly delicious smile all over your face,' Jack said. 'I can only imagine you must have been daydreaming about me.'

He leaned in and gave Ianto a sensuous kiss, which Ianto returned. He couldn't break it to Jack that he hadn't been thinking about him at all.

Jack would be crushed to know that it takes a deam of perfectly ordered and spotless archives to put that smile on Ianto's face! Better to not damage his ego with the truth.
