When Rhys woke up, he was sure he'd been dreaming. Until he tried to move, that was; pain tearing through his shoulder. The sound he made woke Gwen bedside him.
'Hey you,' she said, rolling over and placing a gentle hand on his chest, trying to avoid the spot where he'd been shot. Her stupid, brave fiancé.
He turned to face her, loving that disheveled hair, and deciding on the direct approach.
'Did I really help stop a bunch of guys chopping up an alien space whale yesterday?'
Gwen smiled at him and kissed his cheek. 'Yes, love.'
'Really?'
'Really. Why?'
'Well, I mean, it's just all so unbelievable. You really work for an organization that saves the world from aliens?'
'Really,' she repeated. 'Some days even I don't believe it.'
'And that flashy boss? Jack? He's real too?' He prayed she told him he'd imagined that part and that he was some old crone, cranky and unpleasant.
This time she let out a hearty laugh. 'Him, too.'
'Not sure I approve of you working there,' Rhys muttered.
'Is that because of the aliens, or the attractive men?' she teased.
'The aliens, of course,' he lied.
Sodding Captain Jack Harkness.

Sigh.
