There were times when Jack hated this job. Really, truly hated it. Why couldn't he fix things so that nobody ever got hurt by the rift ever again? Hadn't he been here long enough to have come up with that magical solution that would make everything better? It was times like these he wondered why the hell he bothered anymore.

He let the wind whip around him. God he loved it up here, feeling removed from it all. Up here he could forget that he was meant to be responsible for all those people down there, knowing that he'd failed them yet again.

He sucked in another deep breath. He felt so alive up here, teetering on the very edge. Up here he was master and commander of his own fate. One more step and he could end it, just for a little while, and forget his failures.

The hand on his shoulder stopped him. 'Don't.'

He let out a mirth filled chuckle. 'Why not?'

'Because you don't deserve to suffer. You've done everything you can. More than.'

'It's not enough.'

'You might be immortal, but you're still only human, Jack. You're no more invincible than the rest of us.'

Poor Jack. He care so deeply that the smallest failure tears him up inside. Still, he does the best he can.
