Notes: Being leader is harder than it looks. A double drabble.

Jack really hadn't expected things to be this hard. He'd always assumed Torchwood just ran itself, and that when a rift alert came through, they went out and investigated, dealt with it, and that was that.

Who knew there'd be a hundred phone calls and emails with various government departments, none of whom liked dealing with him. Then there was the problem of money. It wasn't inexhaustible and it was handed out by Torchwood One in trifling amounts that barely kept the lights on.

Time was another factor. With just him here, the hub felt enormous, and there were never enough hours in the day to keep it all in check. From feeding the creatures they kept in the cells and other research areas, to maintaining the hothouse plants, inventorying supplies, and trying to figure out what the hell they were keeping down in all those archive vaults, there was hardly time for the rift to misbehave.

He wasn't sure how Alex's team had managed it all before. On his own it was overwhelming, and he'd never loved the job, coming and going whenever.

He'd never asked for any of this. It was just marking time until his Doctor arrived.

Poor Jack. All that unasked for and unwanted responsibility! But he'll learn, and one day it will be more important to him than the Doctor.
