Jon should have known the victory at Castle Black was a hollow one, if not for the fact that Mance would return tonight to finish the job, then for the reaction from Ser Alliser. He came streaming across the yard with Jon in his sights.

'You left your post, boy!' he said.

'Janos Slynt left the wall without command,' he replied. 'I took charge in his absence until more men were required to defend the castle grounds. I then handed command to Edd.'

'I don't give a fuck what Slynt did. You don't get to give command to anyone, Lord Snow. If I want to set fire to you and throw you off the fucking Wall at Wildings, then that's my decision, not yours.'

'Instead I threw myself at a fucking Thenn that would have had his sword in your back, Ser.' He didn't care was Ser Alliser thought, at least he wasn't a coward like Slynt.

Ser Alliser closed the gap between them. 'And then you'd have liked to shove it in mine, wouldn't you?'

'I wouldn't like to presume I was allowed to decide.'

'That's right. You don't do anything unless I say so, is that clear?'

'Crystal.'
