Jack dropped the report on his desk with a loud thwack before the knuckles had even knocked on his door.

'What are you here to complain about now?' he asked.

'It's not meant as a complaint,' Ianto insisted. He hadn't worked here long enough to earn that right.

'No, of course it isn't. It's just that everything is either missing, broken, or simply not up to your exacting standards. A guy could take that kind of thing personally, you know.' He'd thought he was running things around here pretty well by all accounts.

'Lucky you have thick skin, then, sir.'

I think perhaps Jack's skin isn't quite s thick as Ianto believes it is...

He likes to impress and unfortunately what Ianto has seen so far, hasn't. He probably needs to reinforce the positives so Jack doesn't think it's all bad news.
