Notes: Ianto's attempts in the field leave him frustrated. A double drabble.

Ianto kicked the car tyre in frustration. He was even more embarrassed when he saw that Jack had noticed the gesture. Jack almost never let him tag along on missions, but on this occasion it had been late, and Ianto was still at the hub where the alert came through.

He felt like he had a lot of bad karma to work off and he'd wanted to impress Jack, trying to find his way back into the team. He may have overestimated his abilities though. The whole evening had been a disaster from start to finish, more like a slapstick comedy than a coordinated effort to contain the alien.

Just when he'd thought he was about to make up for all of it, the alien lunged at him, nearly tearing out his throat. Only a glancing bullet from Jack's gun and sent it reeling and scampering away to fight another day. All that effort wasted and they couldn't even catch it.

'Don't beat yourself up,' Jack said, handing him a bandage.

'Why not? 'Didn't he have a right to be annoyed at himself? The gash on his neck bled and stung something awful.

'Sometimes there's more valuable things to save.'
