Summary: Jack's first date didn't go to plan, but it's left a very strong impression.
Gwen nudged Jack in the side as they walked towards the small cafe nestled in amongst the fancy restaurants of the bay, off to pick up pastries for the team.
'What?' Jack asked.
'So? Come on, how was it?'
'How was what?' Jack said, trying to be coy.
'Your date,' Gwen replied, knowing full well Jack knew what she was referring to. 'I want to hear all about it.'
'There's nothing to tell,' Jack lied.
Gwen shoved him harder before looking up at him properly. 'You are such a terrible liar, Jack Harkness.'
'Fine. It was...' he searched for the right word, unable to quite describe it. 'Nice.'
Gwen frowned at the odd expression on his face. 'Are you blushing?'
'I don't blush,' he huffed, increasing his pace toward the cafe.
In truth, it hadn't gone anything like how he'd planned. He'd had a whole year to think about what he should have done before he'd left to go galavanting around the universe with the Doctor, and now he wanted to put some of that into action, assuming it wasn't too late to win Ianto's heart. He'd had the restaurant booked and the movie schedule memorised. Then a weevil had to go and ruin his plans.
Instead they'd ended up sharing greasy fish and chips, sat in the freezing cold around Tiger Bay, staring out at the rotting docks as the stars glittered overhead. He'd wanted to impress Ianto, but it turned out that Ianto was just as happy with the simple things. As if to reward Jack for his failed efforts, he'd most certainly made it up to Jack once they'd returned to Ianto’s flat to continue their date in his bedroom. Just thinking about it again now made him go all tingly, like a lovesick schoolgirl.
How long had it been since he'd done a date with someone he was head over heels in love with? He did rough sex against alley walls outside seedy nightclubs, or one night stands followed by retcon and no promises to call back in a few days. Falling in love again was new territory, and had him nervous and embarrassed like he hadn't been in years. Admitting he was with someone that made him happy and sent his face into a pink flush at the very mention of their growing intimacy, was not a feeling he was accustomed to. How did Ianto do that? Make him feel like he was seventeen again.
Gwen hugged herself to his side, wrapping her arm around his. 'Well, I'm glad it was nice. You deserve a bit of happiness after everything. And Ianto too. He wasn't the same after you left, but now that you're back things will be better.'
'I hope so.'
'So, no kiss and tell? I’m going to have to wring the truth out of Ianto, instead?'
Jack grinned to himself, remembering those blushworthy moments. 'If I told you what we really got up to last night, then you’d be the one blushing.'
