Summary: Going to the movies is hard when you work for Torchwood

Ianto growled audibly as the phone in his pocket vibrated. Next to him in the darkness, Jack's wrist strap was beeping insistently, which was earning them some annoyed glares from the other people in the room.

'Turn your phone off!' someone in front of them turned to say. 'You're ruining it for everyone else.'

Not nearly as much as it was ruining things for them, Ianto thought glumly, getting up and following Jack out of the theatre where he could properly read the message on his phone to find out exactly what they might be dealing with.

'Why does this always happen to us?' Jack complained, heading for the car and slamming the door shut behind him slightly more forcefully than was strictly necessary.

'The rift doesn't do date night,' Ianto replied, already trying to focus his efforts on the task at hand and not dwell on the fact that he'd been enjoying himself. It was one of the few movies they both actually wanted to see, rather than one they just went to so that they could make out in the back row.

'We didn't even get as far as the last time,' Jack said, continuing to complain. 'By the time we get another date night, they'll have stopped showing it.'

That bit did annoy Ianto a little. This was the third time they'd gone to see this particular film, or at least attempted to see it, before the rift decided it had other plans. On every occasion, they'd been interrupted, but this time they'd barely made it half an hour into the movie. He was beginning to feel like his life was on a permanent repeat.

'If this just turns out to be a broken toaster, I'm gonna be really mad,' Jack said, thrashing the engine as the SUV swept across town.

Whilst Ianto didn't want it to be the end of the world, a broken toaster and Jack's foul mood were not all that much better a result. End of the word was unlikely though. It was Tuesday, and nothing exciting ever happened on a Tuesday. The only kind of excitement he had planned was the kind that happened after they got home from the movies. Perhaps if things didn't take too long, that much of their night might still be on the cards. At least that might cheer Jack up. Perhaps this was the universe's way of telling them that they should just buy the DVD. After having spend nearly eight quid so far on tickets and popcorn, it would be a lot cheaper, and save all the hassle of Jack trying to grope him in the car on the way home afterwards.

When they finally arrived at the location of the rift spike, they pulled out their torches and swept them around the empty cafe. It wasn't the easiest place to search given it was full of tables and chairs and a hundred other things. If it was a broken toaster how would they know unless they tried to make toast? It could just be the one that had always been here. He moved around using his PDA to try and pinpoint the source, knowing that unlike pretty much everything else in here, it should be soaked with rift radiation. Jack left him to search the public areas whilst he ducked into the kitchen.

'Don't even think about sampling their pastries,' Ianto warned him.

'I need to do a thorough search,' Jack insisted, 'and the fridge could be harboring our missing item.'

Ianto sighed and rolled his eyes. It would be missing a whole lot more once Jack was done. He could already picture Jack helping himself to leftover cheesecake, not even bothering with spoon and plate.

In the end it was Ianto who found it, wedged between a menu and a sugar bowl on a table that overlooked the high street. Looking at it more closely with his torch, he admired the rift's sense of irony.

'Got it,' he yelled out so that Jack could hear him from behind the swinging kitchen doors.

'You sure?' came the muffled sound, distinctly like the sound Jack made when his mouth was full.

'You can stop checking the muffins for signs of alien interference.' There was no denying he'd found the right object, soaked in radiation.

'What have we got?' Jack said, coming over towards him, pockets unusually bulging.

Ianto held it up and Jack's annoyed frown returned. 'I hate the rift, sometimes,' Jack said, grabbing the book and adding it to his overfilled pocket.

'Well, maybe we should just skip to the last page and then we'll know how the movie ends.' It was probably the closest they would ever get.

The Rift is cruel, maybe they should just skip the movie altogether and read the book instead.

At least whatever Jack's been eating in the kitchen might have sweetened his mood a bit.
