Summary: Ianto has the perfect recipe that works for all occasions.
The scent of baking assaulted Jack's senses the second he was through the door. Gods, but he loved it when Ianto took over their kitchen! They both enjoyed cooking, but there was something different about the way the food tasted when Ianto had been busy baking on his own. Ianto insisted the recipe was the same as always, but Jack was sure there was some secret ingredient added when he wasn't around.
Jack toed his boots off at the door and began down the hallway, carefully ducking so as not to disturb the fake cobwebs that had since been hung. It turned out Ianto had indeed been very busy on his day off, making sure everything was just right for their Halloween celebrations. Hopefully, all that would be left would be to tip a few bags of candy into bowls, don their costumes and throw open the door of anyone brave enough to tackle the gauntlet of pumpkins, ghosts and fake gravestones that littered their front yard. Jack knew that if he'd been ten years old again, it would have spooked him out. He couldn't wait to hear the happy little screams of kids freaking each other out in their yard. Halloween was the one night of the year when screaming and ghoulish beings roaming the streets was okay. Every other night, it was just a normal night at the office.
Jack inhaled deeply. 'Ianto, the place smells amazing,' he called out. He finally entered the kitchen, spotting his husband bending over the oven door, slipping another tray inside.
'Just hold that pose for a moment so I can enjoy it,' Jack teased, admiring the curve of Ianto's backside. Ianto gave it a naughty wiggle for to Jack's benefit before standing up.
'Everything all set?' Jack asked, leaning in for a peck on the cheek.
'Almost. Just finishing up this baking. This is the last tray. Just a couple of minutes to warm them all the way through, but otherwise they're already cooked.'
'What did you bake?'
'Welshcakes.'
'Welshcakes? That doesn't sound very Halloween.'
'They're not very Christmas or Easter either, but you never complain when I bake them then,' Ianto countered.
'Well, sure, but Halloween is all about the scare factor. Not snuggly, feelgood baking.'
Ianto gave him a sly smile. 'That's only because you haven't seen them yet.'
Jack folded his arms. 'Oh? Are these some special Welshcakes we're making?'
Ianto lifted up a teatowel that was covering the tray on the bench top, revealing the cakes underneath. 'They're skull shaped,' he said. 'I found the cookie cutter in the drawer from last year, and I added big raisins for the eyes.'
Jack grinned. 'Those are awesome,' he said, before picking one up and shoving three quarters in his mouth in one go. 'And tasty, too.'
Ianto beamed at the praise. 'I thought you'd like them, but make sure you leave some for our door knockers.'
Jack made a little sound of protest. 'Ghosts and skeletons have no use for Welshcakes. Both are incorporeal. Where would they put them?'
'And what about the candy?' Ianto asked. 'They can't eat that either, is that what you're implying?'
Jack shuffled, sensing that Ianto was backing him into some intellectual corner. 'Well, there's no sense in it going to waste.'
'Never fear. I baked an extra batch just for us.'
