Gwen stood frozen to the spot in shock, unable to process what had just happened. One second everything had been fine. They'd cracked the case, infiltrated The Pharm, gotten Martha safely out and shut the whole place down.

Then in an instant, a gunshot rang out, then a second, and before she knew what was going on, Martha and Jack were knelt on the ground, and between them lay Owen, a ragged and bloody hole in his chest, eyes staring blankly at nothing.

'He's dead,' Martha said. The words didn't even penetrate her conscious mind. He couldn't possibly be dead.
