'Coffee?' Ianto asked, popping his head into Jack's office. Jack was sitting there staring off into space. Images of Gwen and Rhys enjoying the afternoon sunshine were long gone.

'No,' Jack replied. 'Something stronger, maybe.'

Ianto took the instruction, reaching for the crystal tumblers and the decanter of scotch.

'I wish we hadn't had to kill it,' Jack murmured, still dwelling on his guilt over the fate of the space whale.

'Nothing more you could've done, Jack,' dropping his usual "sir". 'At least we gave it a painless death to make up for all the suffering it had to endure.'

They did the only thing they could do for the poor whale. Trying to keep it alive would only have prolonged its suffering.
