Jack dumped the sack unceremoniously on Emily's desk with a thud. She gazed up at him before opening it and peering inside. Her expression didn't even falter at the sight of the severed head. 'And the rest of the body?'

'Dumped in the river.'

'Suppose that now he'd only got one head and it's human, no one will question it,' she mused. 'Filthy parasite.'

Jack sighed wearily. 'Can I have my money now?'

Emily clasped her hands on the desk. 'You know I don't like your attitude, Jack. You should be more grateful I let you have this job. It isn't about the money.'

'No, it's about you threatening to lock me up and torture me if I don't do your dirty work,' he replied, scowling back at her.

She met his gaze without breaking it. 'Quite right, Captain. I really don't need to pay you, but I do. It keeps you coming back to me like the sad little lapdog you are. Expensive habits you've got, drinking and whoring yourself all around town.'

'The whoring comes free,' he replied. 'I don't have to buy my way into someone's bed, unlike some.'

Emily smirked at him. 'Nor do I, Captain.'

I really don't like Emily, she's cold and calculating. Poor Jack having no choice but to work for her.
