Title: Things best left forgotten
Author: m_findlow
Characters: Jack, Owen
Rating: PG
Challenge: 565 - Kid/Kidding at tw100
Notes: Jack has to deal with the aftermath of his team's actions. A double drabble.
Jack surveyed the scene around him on the street. What a mess, he thought. Ed Morgan's blood was on his shirt from where he'd pulled Gwen close to him. Another life wasted thanks to Torchwood.
'Owen, take Bernie inside. Make him a cup of tea or something.'
Owen stepped a little closer. 'And how strong would you like that tea?'
Jack pondered the question. How strong indeed? 'When did Bernie say he found this thing?'
Owen nodded, already reaching into his jacket pocket for the small blister pack of tablets. 'You sure?' he asked, sparing a glance at the scrawny teenager standing uselessly on the side of the road, staring fixatedly on the dead body lying in the middle of it.
'Do I think Bernie ought to learn a lesson about how crime doesn't pay? He tried to extort a guy for money to keep his silence about a murder from forty years ago. He nearly became Ed's second murder tonight because of it. Maybe tonight would make Bernie turn a corner but at the end of the day he's just a kid. A stupid kid, maybe, but still just a kid.'
'Oi, Bernie! Let's go inside for a drink.'
