Title: One last goodbye
Author: m_findlow
Characters: Tosh, Jack
Rating: PG
Challenge: 568 - Privilege at tw100
Notes: Tosh needs to find some closure. A double drabble.
Tosh felt distracted, staring mindlessly through her computer screen, until an arm slipped a tiny piece of paper in front of her. 'What's this?' she asked.
Jack's expression remained neutral. 'It's where they buried Tommy Brockless.'
Tosh studied the paper. 'In Manchester?'
'His body was returned to England for a proper burial,' Jack said. 'The British Army would never publicly admit they executed cowards so repatriated them with the rest.' He rested a hand on her shoulder. 'I thought it might be good for you to go visit. Get some closure.'
And Jack had been right. Standing here now, even in the drizzling greyness that was slowly turning the paper wrapping around her flowers into mush, she felt a weight lifting off her. Thomas Reginald Brockless. Died serving his country, the small plaque read.
And he had, Tosh thought, though no one but her would ever know the truth of it and how he'd not just defended his country, but how his actions had saved the whole world.
'It was an honor and a privilege to serve beside you,' Tosh said, kneeling down to lay the flowers and sweep away a few stray autumn leaves. 'You did your country proud.'
