Title: Learning to forget
Author: m_findlow
Characters: Jack, Torchwood team
Rating: PG
Challenge: 588 - Negotiation at [livejournal.com profile] tw100
Notes: Jack knows the potential cost of defting his own actions. A double drabble.

Jack stared around at his team, having heard all of their various arguments. He couldn't deny that waking up slumped next to an empty cell had left him with an intense curiosity about how he'd gotten there and why. He knew the feeling of being retconned, even if he hadn't left himself a note on his desk telling him that's what he'd done. Not just to himself but the entire team. That he'd left himself no further details about why he'd done it troubled him. Yet at the same time he knew to trust his own instincts. Things had to be dire before he'd retcon the team, erasing a part of their lives that they could never get back.

He knew they meant well, and that they couldn't stand the not knowing. They wanted to be sure they'd resolved the matter, but that necessitated them knowing.

'This isn't up for negotiation,' Jack said, making the declaration loud and unequivocal. 'I know that we could probably find out what happened if we dug deep enough, but it should be enough that we can trust ourselves to have made the right choice. There's something that we can't just afford ourselves to know.'

Quite right, Jack. Remembering is the worst thing any of the team could do,

It doesn't leave Jack feeling any less torn about not knowing what happened, but he knows the price for knowing will be far too high.
