Summary: Jack is walking a fine line between eking out sympathy and unveiling his unique healing abilities.
Jack bit the inside of his lip as Owen studied the scan. 'What's the verdict, doctor?' He hoped Owen had found absolutely nothing wrong with his ankle. Sure, it had been broken, but now it was fine. He just couldn't have the team knowing about his miraculous recovery. That was one secret he meant to keep.
'Couldn't give us a hand with this could you?' Ianto called out.
'Yeah, I'm coming,' Owen said, scampering up the steps to help take the other side of the heavy object.
'Would've been great if someone had put the trolley back where it belongs. I looked for it but couldn't find it. And my "help" could have done with being shoved on a trolley, too,' he added.
'Yeah, sorry, that'd be me,' Suzie called out. 'Think I left it downstairs.'
'Thanks,' Ianto said, finally getting it where he wanted it. He followed Owen back over to the medical bay, stopping to lean over the railing as Owen descended back down. 'How's the patient?'
'Complex compound fracture,' Owen reported. 'Going to be off his feet for weeks.'
Weeks my arse, Jack thought.
'Think you could get a kettle of water going? I'm going to need it to start soaking these plaster strips for his cast.'
'It's fine,' Jack insisted. 'And it's definitely not broken,' he added.
'Who's the doctor around here, anyway?' Owen retorted. 'I've done the scan and it's all there in black and white.'
'I'm telling you you're wrong.'
'You were making a hell of a fuss then,' Ianto said, having half carried him back to the SUV. 'You couldn't even put weight on it.'
'Promise it's nothing.' At least it was now. It was already healing nicely. Despite a few painful snaps as the bones began to knit themselves back together, that was the worst of it out of the way. A few hours and he'd be right as rain. 'You did the scan wrong,' Jack insisted.
'I didn't,' Owen argued.
'So, do it again and prove me wrong.'
'Fine.' Owen pulled the scanner back over and ran it over Jack's ankle. This time the black and white image came back with hardly more than a sprain. 'Huh? I don't get it.'
'You must have had the contrast up too high,' Jack replied. 'Just looked like it was broken. I might have played up the pain. It's not often I can convince Ianto to wrap himself around me.'
'And for that you'll be on decaf for days,' Ianto said, frowning unhappily at Jack having taken advantage of his empathy and generosity.
Jack shrugged. 'Maybe it was worth it,' he teased, giving Ianto a naughty grin. The Welshman was so unflappable most of the time it was good to score a point.
Owen tugged his gloves off and scowled with equal animosity. 'Well, if you're so much better now, you can make your own way out of my medical bay. And don't come back unless you want me to break something for you.'
