Summary: Ianto gets an unusual call whilst on vacation.
'Ianto, you promised me no more phones while we were on vacation!' Jack complained, the distinct ringing sound interrupting the gentle sound of waves creeping up the beach. It was ruining the romantic atmosphere of the sunset they'd come down here to enjoy. Just being on vacation was a big thing. The last thing Jack wanted was for it to be interfered with because his husband was a workaholic.
'Sorry,' Ianto said, rifling through their oversized beach bag, trying to get a grip on it. It was right at the very bottom where Jack wouldn't find it. He dreaded who might be calling. The team had been on strict instructions not to call unless it was genuinely end of the world. What he dreaded more than that was a call to say one of the team had been fatally injured in the line of duty. He cast his gaze out at the glowing orange sunset, praying it was an accidental call. He finally gripped the phone in his hand, frowning at the number which was coming up as unrecognized.
'Hello? Ianto Jones,' he answered. He listened carefully to the person on the other end of the line as Jack scrutinised his expression, searching for details as to what was being said.
The first thing that caught Ianto off guard was the accent of the caller. It was Welsh. Very Welsh. Even he had a hard time understanding the thick lilt of the caller. 'Um, yes,' he said. 'No, we're fine.' Jack quirked an eye at him, questioning the strange answer. 'Oh. Well, no I can't explain that, but what I can say is there's no need to worry. I'm sure they've just been very busy. Yes, no, I understand. We appreciate the call to check in. I'm sure you'll be hearing from them in the next few days. They won't survive much longer without it, that much I can guarantee. Thank you. Bye.'
Jack furrowed his brow at his lover. 'Who was that and what was that all about?'
Ianto laughed to himself, tossing the phone back on the top of the bag. 'I don't think you'd believe me if I told you.'
'Try me,' Jack said, unable to bear Ianto's cagey mystery. It annoyed him when he wasn't in on the joke.
'That was Jubilee Pizza. They were calling to check we were okay. They haven't had an order from the team for nearly a week and were worried something might have happened to us.'
Jack burst out laughing, flopping back onto his towel in the sand.
'What's so funny?' Ianto could admit it was queer and amusing, but Jack's reaction seemed excessive.
Jack took a full minute to compose himself. 'The only people who genuinely care about us are our local pizza delivery shop?'
'I'm sure other people care, too.' Their families for a start.
'Maybe we should call the team,' Jack suggested. 'We can't have our most important fast-food chain go belly up because they lost their best customer.'
'Dramatic, but unlikely.' Despite that, Ianto picked the phone back up and redialled. 'Yes, it's Ianto Jones calling back. Listen. Could you please send us three meat feasts, one vegetarian and one barbecue chicken, all large thanks. And two garlic bread.'
'Coleslaw!' Jack hissed.
'Oh, and two tubs of coleslaw. Yes, just put it on our tab. Thanks.'
'Better safe than sorry?' Jack asked.
Ianto grinned back at him. 'Something like that. Got to make sure the team are properly nourished.'
