Notes: Jack has finally reached the end of the fight. A double drabble.

Jack's heart broke over and over again as he watched Gwen curled up on the floor, her head buried in her knees as she cried. He knew then that this was it; the end of the line, the end of Torchwood. It wasn't just about Ianto being gone, though that killed Jack more than anything. It was knowing that they couldn't go on without him. Something else had died along with him - that spirit that held them all together. They had tried to fight this thing and they'd been defeated.

It forced Jack to pause and wonder. Had they been too slow to action? Too busy just sitting and watching on as government officials made heinous decision after heinous decision, making sure they had it all on tape as blackmail. Or perhaps they'd acted too quickly, not stopping to fully get the measure of the creature they were up against. If they'd known what it was capable, locked inside its cage in Thames House, Jack wouldn't have let anyone go near it. Perhaps like Torchwood One, they'd grown too sure of themselves.

All too late now to lament their actions. Today was the day when Torchwood finally gave up.
