Gwen knelt down to study the thing that had fallen through the rift. Not just fallen, however. It had come down with such a velocity that it was half wedged into the grass. From what she could see of it, it was long and tubular, with no other defining features.

‘Any ideas what it is?’ she asked, as Jack came to rest on his haunches opposite her.

He grinned at her. ‘I don't know, but it looks kinda naughty, don't you think? I could think of a few things.’

She rolled her eyes at him. ‘Only you would say that.’
