Summary: Jack has suffered failure after failure for things outside his control. A double drabble.

Jack didn't care if the team were mad at him. He was mad at himself more than they could ever be. They just didn't understand what was at stake by not giving in to the Mara's demands. They hadn't been there in Lahore, when the Mara had struck in a matter of seconds, killing fifteen men quicker than Jack could have shot them dead himself. That would have been a mercy rather than letting them suffocate like that. No one had meant to kill that child they'd picked as their chosen one. It was an accident, but the Mara didn't care.

Jack knew he'd failed - back then in 1909 and again now. He didn't know what else to do. A whole family had been devastated and he'd stood there and let it happen. The child had been corrupted by them - wicked, vile and selfish creatures.

And worst of all was that he'd lost a dear friend, a woman he'd loved more than anything. She'd seen the beauty in everything, himself included, and Jack's shortcomings had killed her too.

The Mara would be back, Jack knew. There was always another chosen one waiting to be summoned. Next time, he wouldn't fail.
