Summary: Jack has never been so happy to get out of the car.
'Are we there yet?' Owen complained.
'No,' Jack replied, keeping a tense grip on the steering wheel so that he didn't run them off the road in his frustration. Honestly, he'd contemplated self destruction but there were three other people in the car who didn't deserve it, even if it would be a kindness.
A nice trip out to the countryside, that's what Jack had thought this would be. If he'd known Owen would be such a prat, he might have left him behind. He'd moaned the entire way, first about the traffic, then about the state of the winding valley roads, then about the smell of what everyone else would have considered crisp country air.
'Is that a burger van up ahead?' Gwen asked, spotting something distinctly unnatural perched near the crest of the rise.
Oh, thank the gods, Jack thought, already pulling over just short of it. Anything that might temper Owen's snark and grumpiness. 'Who's hungry?' he asked, as if the whole reason for it was on account of his own stomach.
'Yeah,' Owen replied. 'I could do with some civilisation. Poor bastard probably broke down and has been waiting for humans to arrive for three days.'
