Title: Making memories
Fandom: Torchwood
Characters: Jack, Ianto
Author: m_findlow
Rating: PG
Length: 200 words

Author notes: Written for Challenge 242 - Try to remember at
drabble_weekly
Summary: Jack can't help but try to break through the retcon. A double drabble.
Jack let the sand in his palm trickle to the floor, head still cocked to the side, considering it. It meant something, he was sure of it.
He brushed it from his hand as Ianto reappeared in the doorway, still gripping his precious diary. 'Just thought I'd say, not embarrassed about anything you might have read.' It was a terrible lie. Only Ianto's serious expression stopped him laughing.
'You were trying to remember, weren't you?' Ianto asked, though not in an accusatory way. 'Likes it's just there, just out of reach. I can feel it too.'
Jack knew then and there that he'd been caught out in his own trap. To retcon themselves was to protect everyone from whatever it was they'd faced. To break that spell would be disastrous, yet it was human nature to fight against the blank gap, trying to fill it with meaning. The elusive lure of its mystery would eventually diminish, given enough time. Only then would they be truly safe.
Jack gently prised the diary from Ianto's hand and dropped it on the desk behind them. 'So take me somewhere and make me forget all about it,' he whispered, leaning in for a kiss.
