Summary: Jack isn't sure what counts as home anymore. A double drabble.
Gwen caught Jack staring through the window behind his office. Or perhaps he wasn't staring through it, but rather staring at the pattern of stars and solar systems that dotted its surface, bound by rings marking relative distance. There were no labels at all, yet she knew Jack could name every last one. The Milky Way was just one tiny speck, almost invisible, and the universe seemed bigger than the human mind could ever comprehend.
'How far is it from Earth to where you grew up?' she asked, pulling him from his distant thoughts.
Jack turned to look at her. 'From Boeshane?' He shrugged. 'Oh, I don't know. Maybe four hundred and seventy billion light years, or a hundred and forty five billion parsecs, depending on how you count it.'
'That's… a long way.'
Jack nodded. 'Yeah. Not in this map, that's for sure.'
'Do you ever wish you could go there?'
He avoided meeting her gaze. 'It wouldn't be home anymore, or yet. Not for another three thousand years. Even then… Home isn't a place. Not for me. I've lived so many places.'
'And here?' Gwen asked the question with some trepidation.
'As close to home as I'll get.'
