Summary: Jack is caught between a rock and a hard place. A double drabble.
The first time Emily offered Jack money to work for Torchwood, he threw it in her face. Naturally, she didn't take kindly to it and simply locked him back up, visiting only so often to add a little torture and taunting to his already compounding misery.
The second time she let him go and offered him employment, he told her to stick her money somewhere that Victorian Britons probably hadn't discovered yet. This time she let him go. She knew he wouldn't last long back out in the streets without a penny to his name and he secretly hated her for it.
The third time she offered the money, he took it, not because he needed it - even if that were still true - and most definitely because he didn't want to work for Torchwood. But after having discovered some of their handiwork in the form of some poor alien body dumped in the swamps, dead by a single calibre bullet that had Emily's name written all over its striations, he knew he had a moral obligation. Under these conditions, it was all he could do to try and protect people like him, stranded on a world as alien as any.
