Summary: The new job isn't loving up to Rex's expectations. A double drabble.
'It won't happen again, I promise,' Rex said, pulling the phone away from his ear as the inevitable tirade followed. He missed the days when people used to do what he told them, rather than having people tell him how it was.
He huffed. 'Fine. I get it,' he said, before hitting the red button rather harder than was necessary. 'Goddamn it,' he cursed. Then he turned his annoyed gaze on the only other person in the room. 'Is this how it's always going to be?'
Ianto gave him a sympathetic smile. 'You get used to it. Most agencies don't like Torchwood or what it does, so pretty much anything you say comes across as hollow and meaningless.'
'What happened to "outside the government and beyond the police"?'
Ianto chuckled. 'Did Jack tell you that? Is that how he sold this job to you? Talk about hollow promises!'
Rex bristled at the comment. 'A million years of living forever. What the hell else was I supposed to do?'
Ianto leaned against the desk. 'Lots of things. But like us, you chose to do the one thing no one else could. Keep this planet safe. That's more than a lifetime's work.'
