Summary: Seeing it with his own eyes assures Edd he's doing the right thing. A double drabble.
For Edd it was easy to think of Castle Black as being the edge of the world - the last place of human habitation in Westeros, assuming you excluded the Wildlings north of the Wall. Now he was beginning to rethink those long held assumptions.
Having come down from Castle Black, making for Winterfell before the White Walkers overran their meagre fasthold, he'd been instructed to pass through Last Hearth and bring back the last of the Karstarks. Everyone was to fall back to Winterfell for whatever came next.
Seeing the ruined and abandoned remains of a great house chilled him to the bone. They were all dead. The wights had gotten here first and dismembered those they didn't want for their army, leaving the body parts in disturbing swirling formations in the snow or pinned to walls.
Those poor fuckers, he thought grimly. They hadn't stood a chance out here leagues from their nearest allies and seemingly far too close to their enemies for comfort. It was all the proof Edd needed to know he'd done the right thing bringing the Night's Watch south and abandoning the fortress they'd held for a thousand years. None of the living were safe.
