Summary: Suzie wasn't expecting competition. A double drabble.
When Jack had recruited her, Suzie assumed that she'd been picked out for her guile and her investigative prowess. She was therefore taken aback when Jack introduced her to the team - one lone computer technician.
'Suzie Costello, meet Toshiko Sato,' Jack said in that ever affable tone. She's our resident genius at Torchwood. At least she supposed he used the term "our" and not "my".
Tosh of course flushed under the overt praise. 'I'm really not,' she said, which told Suzie everything she needed to know. She bloody well was a genius, and Jack's effusive praise for her work was going to take some outdoing.
She'd assumed there'd be a pecking order in any team and that she'd be joining like-minded individuals, but to sit underneath a computer geek was almost more than she could bear.
Perhaps Jack was testing her. Perhaps he wanted to see how she really ticked when faced with competition. And she was competitive, only she expected to have to compete against men who always assumed their natural proficiency against her own street smarts and dogged determination. Competing with another woman was something new. She wouldn't let it deter her. She simply knew she was better.
