Summary: Ianto wakes up to a Torchwood that is far beyond his imagining.

Ianto ran a hand over his face as he stared at it in the mirror. He didn't even feel like himself even though he looked just the same, still just this side of thirty and no different from the day he'd been put into stasis, not quite at death's door, but inching quickly toward it before making the incredibly hard decision.

Six hundred years felt like it had somehow aged him in the process. He'd never imagined it might take that long for someone to find a cure. A few years at most he'd assumed. Maybe a decade. That they'd simply forgotten all about him and the fact that they were meant to be hurrying to find a solution hurt more than he could find words for. He was just a nobody that, after a few years, had faded from the minds of the people who came after him. He hadn't been missed, and that was probably the hardest thing to get to grips with.

He'd expected Jack to still be here, waiting for him. Waiting for a time when Ianto would be healed and whole and they could resume what had been a happy existence together. Even Jack had forgotten all about him. It had been agony to make the decision, asking Jack to put him into Torchwood's deep freeze. It was that or death, and knowing that Jack would live forever, Ianto wasn't ready for death when there was every chance the future held a cure for him.

This new Torchwood however was like stepping into an alternate reality. Nothing was how he imagined it might be, way off in that distant future. Torchwood had turned a corner in the time he'd been there, with Jack at the helm to make sure it was headed in the right direction. Even without Ianto as its leader, Jack would step back into the role, holding the fort. Torchwood was going to do great things in the name of humanity, and maybe one day the people of this planet would finally be able to know about it. Well, that much was true at least. Torchwood was public knowledge, but this new world order and that power it wielded frightened him more than a little.

It wasn't how he'd planned it. No one was leaping to hand him back his old job. The fact that he'd once run the organisation suddenly counted for very little. Things have changed a lot since you would remember it, they said. I'm sure we can find you a supporting role somewhere, they said, which was to say he'd gone back to being the smallest, lowest cog there was. Insignificant as he now felt, he had a bigger job to do. New Torchwood was corrupt and high on power, threatening to bring war to the wider universe. It was his job to rescue it, and the future of mankind. If he'd been brought back from certain death for only one reason, this had to be that reason.
